Growing Up in a Digital World at Millbury Street Elementary School

Sixth grade students at Millbury Street Elementary School recently attended a powerful digital safety assembly.  Professional school speaker and edutainer Robert Hackenson Jr. delivered the presentation.

The Growing Up in a Digital World presentation was made possible by the hard work of the Grafton Elementary School PTO. Their support helped bring meaningful education to students during a critical stage of development.

The presentation focused on how students can use technology safely and responsibly. Robert addressed how digital habits impact daily life, emotions, and relationships.

Focus Points of the Presentation

One key topic was screen time and mental health. Students learned that too much screen time can increase stress and emotional overwhelm. Screens should never replace sleep, exercise, or face-to-face time with friends. Robert emphasized the importance of protecting sleep. Personal devices should be turned off at least one hour before bedtime. Healthy sleep supports mood, focus, and learning.

Digital Communication skills were another major focus. Students learned that texting and posting are not complete forms of communication. Online messages lack tone, body language, and context. This can cause misunderstandings to escalate quickly. To help students make better decisions, Robert shared simple digital rules:

  • When emotions run high, put the screen down
  • Turn off personal devices one hour before bed
  • Limit recreational screen time to under two hours per day

Online safety was another essential topic. Robert explained the risks of talking to strangers online. He discussed why personal information must always be protected.

A powerful lesson focused on digital footprints. Everything posted online represents the student and their community. That includes family, school, teams, and organizations. Even deleted content can live forever through screenshots and sharing. Students learned to pause before hitting send and to imagine everyone seeing the message forever.

For parents, a full recording of the presentation is available below. Additional resources are also included. These tools help families continue the conversation at home.

Thanks to the Grafton Elementary School PTO, students gained skills they will use for years. The presentation empowered students to grow up safer, smarter, and more confident online.
