What Parents Should Know After Student Presentations in Hamilton, NJ

Recently, I had the opportunity to present to students at Grice Middle School and Reynolds Middle School in Hamilton, New Jersey. While these sessions were delivered directly to students, the topics we covered are just as important for parents to understand and reinforce at home.

Today’s students are growing up in a world where technology influences nearly every part of their lives. That’s why a major focus of these presentations was the teen screen time impact on mental health. Many students don’t recognize how constant notifications, social comparison, and late-night scrolling can affect their mood, confidence, and sleep. Helping them become more aware of these patterns is the first step toward healthier habits.

Additional Topics Covered

Communication and Miscommunication in a Digital Age

We also spent time on communication skills—something that has become increasingly challenging in a digital environment. Texts, snaps, and DMs often lack tone, which can quickly lead to misunderstandings and conflict. Students learned strategies to pause, think, and respond more intentionally. These same conversations are critical for parents to continue at home.

Online Safety

Another key topic was safety. Through middle school internet safety programs in New Jersey schools, students are learning how to recognize risks like cyberbullying and online predators. Many were surprised to learn how easily someone can fake an identity or manipulate conversations online. Awareness is important—but consistent guidance from parents is what reinforces safer choices.

Digital Reputation

We also had powerful discussions about digital reputation. Students don’t always realize that what they post, share, or comment on can follow them long-term. Coaches, colleges, and future employers are paying attention. This is where the teen screen time impact on mental health connects to decision-making—impulsive posts made in emotional moments can have lasting consequences.

For Parents

Although parents were not in attendance for these school-day presentations, you still have access to the information your children received.

Below, you’ll find a recorded version of one of the student presentations. Simply use the code provided by your school to access the video for up to 60 days. In addition, there is a recorded parent presentation along with links to valuable resources designed to help you navigate these topics at home.

For schools across the region, this is why many are implementing middle school internet safety programs in New Jersey schools—to create alignment between what students learn in school and what families reinforce at home.

At the end of the day, this isn’t about eliminating technology. It’s about helping students use it in a way that supports their well-being, protects their future, and strengthens their relationships.

And that’s a conversation worth continuing.
