Over the years I have performed magic at kids birthday parties and one thing that most parents don’t think about is whether their magician has the experience and know-how to handle your audiences’ ages and size.
When performing a magic show for kids be sure to let the magician know the ages of your kids. Kids magic is interesting in that it only takes a couple year difference amongst the kids ages for the magician to select a completely different show set of magic. The reason for this is that a 4 year old would see some magic as great when a 7 or 8 year old would see it as lame.
As a magician, I want to control the attention of this kids so if I know the entire audience is going to be 4 and 5 year olds or 8 and 9 year olds, then I know what affects work well to those particular ages. However, if show is a public event and the audience is a mix of ages between, lets say, 4-65 then I know I need to have a different style of magic all together that will amaze both the 4 and 65 year olds.
Audience size and knowing the surroundings is also very important to magicians. If the audience is going to be 10-20 people and inside the magician can use their own voice, however if the audience is 30 – 100 and outside the magician would most likely opt to use a sound system. In order to captivate the audience throughout the show it is important that everyone, including those sitting in the back can clearly hear everything being said. If this does not happen the people that can’t hear well will become frustrated, disengaged, begin to speak to others around them and become a big distraction.
That said, when planning your event and booking your magical entertainer, be sure that they get the right information and have the knowledge and experience to entertain your audience.
